Association of Day Folk High Schools

 

 

The Day Folk High Schools offer general non-formal adult education and education concerning employability and preparation for further education and lifelong learning.

The Association works to strengthen and develop non-formal learning environments which

  • deal with societal and existential issues
  • strengthen the personal competences of the learners
  • improve the opportunities of the learners regarding employment and education
  • are characterized by holistic thinking

Day Folk High Schools do not upgrade qualifications to a specific standard but clarify, release and develop the talents and resources of the individual learner.

Primary t.g.: Day folk high schools and other non-formal learning environments

Secondary t.g.: Authorities and other relevant stakeholders


Description of the organisation's activities:

The Association of Day Folk High Schools ia:

  • represents and pursues interests of day folk high schools towards authorities and other organisations.
  • supports establishment and running of day folk high schools and similar learning environments through consultancy
  • supports exchange of experience and ideas

The day folk high schools offer general non-formal adult education and education concerning employability and preparation for further education and lifelong learning. The schools are located close to the participants' homes.

The schools offer a wide range of activities with ia cultural, societal, creative and aesthetic aspects. The teaching covers both general and vocationally oriented topics. Many of the schools provide education in basic skills/literacy.

Special emphasis is put on strengthening personal development and improving the possibilities of entering the labour market or the educational system. Courses normally last 4-20 weeks with 25-30 hours a week.

The day folk high schools are private institutions/ community interest companies, recognised by the municipality.

Grants/financing come from municipalities, student fees and business activities. Approximate  20 %  participate on voluntary basis, and 80 % participate as part of an employment programme.

Besides consultancy on daily basis, the Association is working with a number of focus topics and development projects in the field of non-formal adult education and preparation for education and employment. Focus topics are ia guidance counseling, recognition of prior learning, motivation for lifelong learning, basic skills and community interest financing.

Size of the organisation: 20 schools; app. 10.000 learners per year.
